Roses are Red & We're staying home...

Rox and I are preparing to stay in for the weekend--Ecuador and most of South America will be celebrating their equivalent of Memorial Day tomorrow--a little different than the US in that they commemorate all the souls that have passed, not just those that died for their country...plus it was payday...plus it's a three day holiday...

We knew it was big, so figured that we'd go shopping for the weekend on Wednesday, but so did everyone else, went home and decided to come back between noon and 2:00--that worked out fine...got a ton of stuff for the larder...and will limit ourselves to eating, reading, sleeping, studying espanol, and walking on the beach...for the next three days...

What was really interesting, however, was that when we arrived at the Supermercardo the first time, there were, what we figured , tons of people in the parking lot, selling flowers out of shopping carts.  We were amazed to see a little later, that these folks with tons of flowers were customers who had just stocked up on flowers for their personal use!!!  When we went in, the area where Rox usually buys roses, had flower bunches stacked tight for about 100 square feet!!!  This area was roped off, and store personnel were only letting in a few folks at a time to keep it from being a flower crushing madhouse...course everyone was polite and civil...not like a sale of discount wedding dresses...

Turns out, in this culture, one decorates the grave site of everyone in his family or in his acquaintance...so muchas flores para la gente...

And...after that, I think the three day holiday mood kicks in...more on that later.  We've been hearing a band practicing about a block from here for a week, and there were samples of fireworks in the air last night...

On that note...on the nite of Halloween, the kids all dressed up in costumes and went from house to house, as much as one can, in an area full of security apartment houses...but they didn't seem to be carrying trick or treat bags...just running around, having fun, and being kids...lots of them dressed in red from head to toe, a superman, a skeleton, some dance hall type look on a couple of the little girls, and some dressed as mom and dad...fun to watch...

As I have mentioned to several of you in emails, Manta has a Navy dock and Air Force installation about 10 miles out of the city...but since we are a coastal area, they limit all military and civilian flights to low flying out to sea...but the other night, we had a great time watching a bunch of fighters doing touch and gos just at twilight.  We think that maybe another squadron had flown in cross country, and that was an additional part of the their training.  It was sort of like the Grants Pass flyover--except that these fighters weren't Tomcats--American made, but not ones that I could readily identify...and that's not saying a whole lot anyway...a great time for us...love the sound of those great jet engines...

I added a couple of new pics to the entry "build it and they will come"...
