Today, I joined a very select club...

OK...here it is...the club I'm referring to is much maligned, laughed at, and insulted, but only by those folks looking in from the outside...

Tonight, we were on the deck watching the sun sink into the ocean (not a distant fog bank), and I actually SAW THE FAMOUS GREEN FLASH!!!.

Now, what the heck is this lunatic talking about, you ask?  In the Caribbean, and in yachting circles, there have been rumors for years, of a green flash seen just as the the sun slides into the ocean.  Of course, many have looked, but few have seen...and frankly i, too wondered if it wasn't the result of one too many margaritas...

I believe that this phenom was mentioned in Herman Wolks "Don't Stop the Carnival"...but you can Google for more info..STA72511.JPG

This is the sunset just before the sun hit the water and turned green!

Here is how it went down...

This was one of those evenings where there seemed to be quite a bit of cloud cover, and we mentioned that there probably wouldn't be much of a sunset, so we went about making dinner.  but, as the minutes  passed, clouds opened up to let a bunch of sunlight in and the whole sky began to turn color...the oranges just knocked our socks off!!!

And, if fact, the sky was clear all the way to the huge orange ball that was just settling on the water.  I told Rox not to look directly at it, and tried not to do the same.  I finally figured it was safe when more than half the sun was submerged in the water, and the clouds were on fire.

I just continued to watch as the top half of the sun got smaller and smaller until there was just a little skull cap left...and then it happened!  The skull cap went from bright orange to new leaf green for about one half second!

Boy oh Boy, was I excited...this was the real thing with no half measures...I had seen green, green, green...and you all know that I don't drink, so no obvious contradictions...

Here's how the experts explain it.  As you remember, your third grade teacher gave you a name of a famous man to help you remember the colors of the rainbow, and in which order they occur.  His name was ROY G BIV, which, of course stands for, Red, Orange, Yellow, GREEN, Blue, Indigo, & Violet.  Now the theory goes like this...as the sun goes down, the long (or shorter--I forget which) rays tend to go away a little sooner due to the curvature of the Earth, and the atmosphere.  So take away the normal, red, orange,& yellow, and you have the next color in the spectrum...which is GREEN!!!  And I saw it!!!

So folks, now that I know it's real, it's your turn...don't give up when you see the sun sinking into the sea with no underlying fog, just keep your eyes peeled, and you, too, can be a member of this exclusive club...

Victor and I joined the club in Hawaii. The Hawaians stop everything at sunset to watch for the green flash.
