A Year and  Counting...

Wow...time surely does fly when you're having fun!!!  This week we will have been in Ecuador for a full year--pretty exciting!!!

Here are a few of the highlights...and maybe a couple of observations...

'Course we had to have a party...

and a cake...

and a bunch of food...

and a plane flight...

If you go back to the early entries, you will find the story of where i had to quickly help the flight crew re-attach the bi-fold door to the first class toilet, or the pilot was going to scrub the flight and take us back to the gate...when we got it done we got a round of applause and free drinks to Houston...(Rox got a bunch of those little blue Sapphire Gin bottles to take along, even.)

Then on the Houston-Quito flight, our flight attendant, a man from Ecuador, was so taken that we were going to settle in his country, that those free drinks just kept on flowing.  (Turns out that the first class was right in front of us, and nobody was drinking much...)

We spent several days in Quito, and found our little SUV that has served us so well...here is a pic of the sellers, Paolo and Jenny...

We then drove to Manta on the west coast, rented an apartment for four months, with the definite goal of trying to find a place to live on the beach.  It was slow going, and we took many side trips north and south, but really liked the Montanita area.  Finally one day, Rox discovered this place, and after much back and forth with the sellers, and the paperwork, we finally were able to call it ours.

It needed mucho work--see blog entries about that...here is the living room before and after Rox took a shot at it...

and after...

Once in awhile we take some Spanish lessons--we can sort of get our point across, but the more we know, the more that we realize how much more we have to learn...here is a shot of Bob with Karen, our first teacher in Manta...

And then we took a little trip to the jungle...a terrific experience!!!  Here is our boat, and a couple of shots of us with the locals and in the jungle...

In our travels, we discovered Cuenca, and we just love that place!!!  It is located at the 8300 foot level in a bowl among much higher peaks.  It is very European, a real city, and completely different from our life at the Coast.  Lots of Ex-Pats, good restaurants, shopping, and availability of just about everything that you need.  Also, the scenery knocks your socks off...Here is the living room of the apartment that we bought...We had some visitors, namely Rich and Nancy, my brother and his wife,

Allan and his wife Mary Lou--friends of Ron whom a lot of you know--we are hoping that Ron and his brother will grace us with a visit early next year.

And, we are waiting for Bob and Jan to arrive in just a few days for a visit, first to Cuenca, a drive to the Coast, and then some beach time...

Speaking of Beach Time:

A common thread running thru all of our time here and our reason for settling in Ecuador, was our long held dream of some day living on a beach--the US Coast is way too expensive--we are now living that dream!!!

The beach is right out our front door...we hear it 24 hours a day, spend countless hours mesmerized by the changing tides, waves, colors, and everything else in it and on it...and it is always entertaining!!!   And...the sunsets knock our socks off!!!
