Loja Adventures

Well, we had some terrific adventures on our three day, round trip, driving south to the beautiful city of Loja.  We have so many pictures and things to tell about, that we think we will divide the story into three parts...

As we go south, we are basically driving down the spine of the Andes...and, since you all know that mountain driving consists of going around and around the various peaks, you can imagine that we hit all points of the compass just about every half hour.

The altitude of Cuenca is 8400 feet, but you must go higher to get out of the bowl, and then you continue south to Loja which is about 6300 feet.

The road conditions go from absolutely fabulous, running on a new ribbon of one foot thick concrete, to nonexistent, running in oozing mud and debris fresh from the side of the last mountain we passed.

Here are several pictures to give you an idea...

This road making machine involves lots of cement trucks pouring down a bunch of concrete, and the machine and all the men flattening it out to make a great road...

This is the ribbon that stretches round and round...

Just to give you a little contrast--here is the other extreme...

And here are a few scenes and people that we saw along the way...

Some old guy drinking coffee and watching the clouds roll under us...

This little girl was glad to pose, once we showed her her picture in the camera...
