The President Makes a Major Address Right Next Door!!!

It's not everyday that you find out that the President of the country where you are living is going to make a major address to the Nation and the World, just a block from your house...

We were pretty excited, because, contrary to what the US Press and the White House say, Rafael Correa is a really good guy, for the people, and for the Nation.  In fact, on most weekends, he can be found riding his bicycle in some part of the country, where he gets to see how things are first hand, and addresses people's concerns personally.

In case some of you might be wondering about his qualifications...He has a PhD in Economics from the University of Illinois, and has worked extensively with indigenous people all over this country. and he is striving mightily to get Ecuador out of the mindset that it must remain a "third world country", whatever that means these days...Plus, his mom lives in California...

He was eating in a little restaurant right off the square, here in Manglaralto, so we wandered over in the hopes of maybe getting a picture or two from an extreme distance...did a lot better than that...

I took these shots from about three feet away from the President...sort of wanted to shake hands, but he missed mine, but, I got a "thumbs up" in the next picture.  As the President was adjusting his mike, and getting the notes ready, he looked over in my direction, and I gave him a thumbs up as I was getting ready to snap the picture with one hand held high...here's the result...

Now, we are the first persons to say that our Spanish is not quite up to par to understand all of what the President was saying, but it was good enough to like what we heard.

Naturally, any speaker tries to warm up the crowd with tales of a local nature, and a politician stresses the improvements that he has brought to the local community...

The best one by far, is that he has completely repaved the "Ruta del Sol" which is the Pacific Coast Highway of Ecuador...this will increase the tourism a great deal, and put money into a lot of pockets in many impoverished towns.  For us, it means that whenever we drive, we can appreciate the scenery, instead of continually being on the lookout for bone jarring and car-breaking potholes...

He talked about increasing the reserves required for banks...(gee...what a good idea...maybe it will catch on up North).

He emphasized that Ecuador has a $3,000,000,000 surplus, while other countries are wallowing in tons of debt.

He also talked about restructuring Ecuador's debt...For more on this read "The Economic Hitman"...it will tell you about mucho nefarious ways that the bad old days were bad for Ecuador...

He talked about a new petroleum transfer point to be built for ocean going super tankers, just about 20 miles south of here.  Good for everyone.

He talked about trade with China, relations with the US, and using the Dollar as a currency  for  Ecuador.

There was quite a lot more, and I will check tomorrow's news for exact details, and hope that it also makes the Internet...

All in all, a fun morning...
