Baby Sea Turtles Underfoot...

Well, I have to say that today was a really special one...I was taking Coquita out for a little walk, and we saw several little black things crawling to the water.  On closer look, we discovered that they were baby sea turtles that had just crawled out of holes far up on the beach.  These little guys were making their way downhill to the water!!!  I have some nifty pictures of Rox holding a couple of them in her hand as she carried them down to the water.  Here's a shot of a little bugger that I picked up...

Well, Rox and I took about 8 of them safely to the water and made sure that they made it thru the surf...and then we went back for lunch...

After lunch, I went down and found four of these little guys on their way to the water and three more coming out of holes leading from the buried eggs.  The waves were really high today so, I took these and three more to a spot where the rip tide would circle around and give them a little surfing experience right into the base of the oncoming wave, thus ensuring that they get into deep water soon, and not be beat up by surface waves.  So ten more safely to sea!

I Googled some info, and found that the turtles are without sex when they come from the egg, but the temperature of the sand determines their sex...cool sand for female and hot for male...sort of macho, but easy to remember...all girls today...

Here are two of them fighting to get out into the world...they seem so small for such a huge environment...

However, we believe that two of these little guys might just make it fine, as by some strange coincidence, an employee of the aquarium in Valdivia, just south of us, drove by with his wife, and said that if they took two, they could put them in with their salt water environment, thus ensuring that they would have a really good chance to grow up...sounded good to us, but we made sure who he was by checking his employee card...

Rox and I both remember that, about a month ago, we saw tracks of a big sea turtle leading up to this area, but we didn't think much of it then...turns out it was a mama laying her eggs...

They grow up to be really huge...
