Just 'cause it's thatched--don't mean it's hokey...

Now, most people believe that the famous "thatched" roofing that you see all over the world (where palm trees grow, anyway), are just a bunch of cut fronds from palm trees, that are layered from the bottom up to form a somewhat rain resistant covering for folk's houses.

And for the most part, that is pretty much correct...

However, that doesn't mean that the person is "poor", or that there aren't more elaborate ways of marketing "thatched" roofing.

One thing we learned, as we took our jungle trip last year, was how putting modern society's bag on another culture is not necessarily good or better.  For example, one of the former governments here in Ecuador decided that the natives in the jungle should get rid of their thatch and they generously installed corrugated tin roofing instead...

Not such a good idea--for one thing, it rains like the sky is falling in the jungle, so where thatch used to soften the sound, now it is so loud that it is uncomfortable to be inside, so they go out in the rain.  Plus--being at the Equator, it is hot here, so where thatch used to provide a nice one foot layer of insulation from the hot sun, the corrugated roofing heats right up so the the homes are like ovens--again, people go outside and sit under trees...Plus...the nail-holes in the corrugated roofing tend to expand, and they leak water into the homes, where the thatch did not.  Take a look at "progress"

There is a $300,000 home being built about a half mile south of us on the beach, and, what do you know, they covered it in thatch--smart and rich guys...

Here are a couple of brand new structures that feature "thatch"...

Take a look at the new homes going right next door to the big thatch house...

Now they also formulate thatch so that it can be easily carried and installed--it comes in rectangular packages...take a look...

Now each of these bundles opens up in a long run that starts at the bottom of the roof, and gets nailed in layers all the way up to the top...this house put it up a couple of months ago...

So...next time you see a "thatched" roof here in Ecuador, or anywhere else, for that matter, don't just think hokey, think smart, really smart...
