Some of the stuff we do at the beach...

We've had a couple of potential expats ask us lately, "just what do you do all day?"...and the answer is, there is more to expat life than eating and shopping!

Rox and I read a lot, and since we think TV is bad for our blood pressure, we don't have one here at the beach...

During the last two months, we have supervised the remodeling and enlivening of a small cottage on property purchased by our friends Shell and Marsha.  This place will be their home until they finish building their new home elsewhere on the property.

It was pretty run down, so we got Manuel and Alfredo on board to make it habitable...

Here are a few before shots...

This cottage was sitting forlorn and uninhabited for a long time, stripped of living comforts, and filled with mold and moldy smells...H

Deciding to do which job first was daunting...(no more smelly mold was first...)

Every inch received a treatment of anti-fungal, and then paint, paint, paint...

Alfredo plumbed a new water heater (where there had been none), and beefed up the electrical with new breaker boxes, and plumbed for washer and dryer, plus lots of new duplex receptacles...

We also constructed a new privacy and security wall, and here is Alfredo fabricating re-bar for the concrete uprights...

Here's how that wall looks now...

Here are some "after" shots...

We bought the water heater, bed, wooden furniture, wiring and plumbing fittings in Salinas, the end tables in Montanita, the cushions custom made in Manglaralto, the fridge and stove in Manta, and the bedding and towels, kitchen supplies, wall hangings, and drapery brackets in Cuenca.  Rox made the curtains.  Concrete materials for the wall came from Manglaralto...  Eighteen screens, the closet, the kitchen shelf, and the bathroom shelves were custom made in Manglaralto...

Agripina and her daughter Sonia...cleaned every square inch as we all "backed out" of the cottage, two days before Shell and Marsha arrived...

"The Crew"  on the "last" day...

Hi Karen...thanks for the good vibes...always nice to know that someone out there is reading this stuff!
Rox did all the coordinating of colors, fabrics, and other goodies--I just hold the other end of the board...

Stay tuned,

Bob & Roxanne

Fun and inspiring post. We are constantly encouraged by our generous blog-friends as we plan our transition to Cuenca in November. Thank you! Rejoicing, Gary Gaither
