« We spend Rox's birthday quietly in our favorite Cuenca Restaurant... | Main | Kitchen is Finished!!! Yeah!!! »

Agripina has a birthday, the floors are done, and the place is finally dusted off...

This last Saturday, we had a crew of five folks working like crazy, to eliminate the explosion of cement and wood dust that had invaded every nook and cranny of our house.  The high speed grinding machine that cut through the cement wall to make the arch for the kitchen is also the one we used to grind down the hardwood floors.  The machine worked like magic, because it was operated by our really strong guys.

However, it also throws out a huge cloud of dust that permeates all areas of the house--even with the doors shut!!!

It turns out that all of our flooring is guayacan, which is known to be the hardest wood in the world.  It is so strong that it has even been used in bygone times to fashion gears to fit on water driven armatures, for example.  Not only was the wood used for knife handles, but it was actually sharpened enough to be the blade!!  We know that it is impossible to drive a nail into it.  The guys put on three coats of spar varnish, so it was a little while until we could really walk on it.

Here is a shot of the 40 year old hardwood after we got the furniture cleaned up and put back...

Guayacan lumber is found in the north end of South America, and Ecuador is trying to encourage tree farms of hardwood, in place of cutting down the indigenous trees.

The work crew that  cleaned up all the dust also washed over 400 sides of glass (that's 1600 corners-whew!).  They worked solid for 6 hours last Saturday, except for a bunch of pastries and Cokes that we provided to give them energy, and they were thrilled to get the 80 bucks that we passed around...

Agripina was pretty much in charge of the crew, as she knows where everything goes, and she did all of this on her birthday!  Here is a shot of her and Isidro, as we had them over for a few birthday presents and some birthday toasts...

We also liked this shot on the bar stools...

Guys.............you should really try to post about twice a week. You didn't get this plum assignment to just sit around and stare at the water in front of your house with a beautiful 2nd story kitchen. If you're going to act right, we need more pics and details of daily life south of the equator. Remember, there are people on the East Coast salivating for your position. Don't let us down and don't let a Northener get your deal. OK. stop reading; start snapping and get to that keyboard. Oh yeah, cute dog.

Hi El L...thanks for writing...
You are touching on a really tough problem for bloggers. I am sure that you are reading dozens of blogs out there, and a bunch of them post all the time--but, it's the same ol' S... week after week.
We have a huge number of outrageous sunset photos, even a couple showing the famous "green flash", which we see about every other night...but we sort of feel that if we included a sunset everyday, you would all quit reading out of sheer boredom
We have beautiful pictures of our many trips over the Andes, and lots of llama photos that can knock your socks off, but they are very similar, so we keep them on the hard drive and don't beat you to death with a bunch of same 'ol, same 'ol.
What we try to do, however, is post when we really have something to write about that is different and interesting...
Some days, living is Paradise is just that--how often can we say that the weather is perfect, the beach and waves are breath-taking, the sky is cobalt blue, the babes are wearing smaller bikinis, when it happens day after day..
Plus...a lot of that repetitive stuff comes under the heading of "doing research"...
However, saying that, we are in the middle of some fun stuff right now, and will be posting soon...
Thanks mucho--Bob & Roxanne
