Doings at the Beach as we "get ready" to "get ready"...

We've been surrounded by different animals lately, so here are a few photos to show what we are seeing, and also to see how the local fishermen catch tons of fish without even the help of any motorized device.

I walked out the other morning, and Lorraine the resident parrot, was having a face-off with a large iguana about why he was eating all of her food.  These two eat mostly the same stuff...

I shooed him away after he had feasted on a banana and some cantaloupe...

Yesterday, Rox called me on the cell phone to say that the fishermen had caught more than double the number of fish,  in one net,  than we had ever seen before...

Here is a shot of us joining up,  as the Sandpipers studiously ignore us...

The fishermen launch a boat by hand and row in a large semi-circle, all the while doling out a net, and eventually connect up each side of the net, as the guys pull it in by hand.  In the next pictures, you will see what these few guys hauled in.  Their catch filled an astonishing thirteen trucks!

These happy guys were near the front of the 13 trucks waiting to load...I think I counted 12 trucks still waiting, and this is after several full ones had left...

This is a day that everyone, young and old, got a bunch of free fish!

Here are some more shots of the huge catch...

Here are Tom and Candace, our suite guests, posing in front of the catch with Roxanne...

We watched them take hours to haul the catch by crate and net to the waiting trucks...

After all is said and done, the fishermen must clean all the 1000's of feet of line, and shake the sand out of the net, and load it up back into the boat, for tomorrow.  And...then they must lift this monster heavy boat up onto the truck bed!!!On this day, it was all worth it--sometimes they do all the same work and get nada...but Hey! that's why they call it "fishing"...

Hi BobnRox

I simply love your blog. I'm traveling to Ecuador(coast) for the month of March. In your opinion.. should I just trust that I'll find a place to hang my hat when I get there? or.. Should I work out where I'm staying before I get there?

Hi Connie...Thanks for the good words...

You are smart to be thinking about a place to stay ahead of time, especially in March. That is the tail end of our high season, and there may not be too many places that can accomodate you for a month. I would suggest that you begin to correspond with landlords who have rentals on the Coast. That way you can make your wishes known to a number of folks, and maybe the perfect spot will open up for you.

Good luck,

Bob & Rox
