A Softer Shade of Red (light, that is!!!)

!!!there was a big sign reading ROBERT HEDGES ANTONIA HOTEL with a handsome smiling young man waiting for us., He was our driver for the hotel and boy were we glad to see him... Forgot to add, that this young man was driving at a respectable speed of 50 mph thru deserted parts of Quito, but that there seemed to be a secret code for going thru traffic lights!!!  Some red ones he sailed thru, some he merely slowed for and he actually stopped at one (but it had no traffic crossing)...I finally had to ask, as a potential driver myself, just how does one determine the exact shade of red to stop for???  He merely smiled and said something in spanish that was lost on me...!!!
