Thoughts about food...and other stuff in stores...

Never could understand how Wal-Mart could charge $1.63 a pound for zuccini in August, when most gardeners can't give the stuff away...but here in Ecuador...with year round growing season(s), the forces of the market really work...

As you can see from the pics, we have spent a lot of time in restaurants, where very nice waiters love taking pictures of their customers...and seeing the results in the little screen...frankly, I think that there is a little too much definition myself...I'm thinking of putting in pink soft lights all over the place...and looking in the mirror with my reading glasses off...

Rox has maintained her weight, but I have found that I love the dark bread made with very unrefined flour...sort of a sop to the cardiologist who wrote the South Beach Diet, but I find that my pants are getting a little tighter in spite of my clever logic...

So...we have decided to eat in more often, and get back to about phase 1.5 of the SBD...meaning lots of veggies, certainly less bread and breaded stuff, and stick to our brand of cooking chicken and pork.  Now for the good part...Zuccini (sp) in two really big plastic bags checked out at 44 cents the other day, and three huge broccoli heads were about 50 cents.  Wal-Mart would have had that at over 5 bucks...Celery, Tomatos, and some mushrooms were also pretty low priced...Chicken breasts and center cut pork chops are about two thirds of Wal-Mart's price.

but...

Equal box of 200 packets is over 8 bucks...wine in a box is about 2.50 a liter...coffee is mostly instant, and priced about the same, as are paper products...

and...

Sheets and towels are thru the roof...our place came with three sets of queen size sheets, but not too imaginative in design, so we trotted on down to the local dry goods store, next to the supermercado...just to upgrade a little...well, let me tell you that we are still sleeping on unimaginative sheets (no snickering out there)...A two sheet set of queensize sheets is $49.00, and towels are $11.00 each...for ok quality...

However, we did buy a comforter, sham, bed ruffle, and throw pillow set for $64.00, presumably, because, it is not in, to have blankets, cause of the nice evening temps...Made the bed look great, and it feels good to pull up a real blanket, instead of just a sheet...

and...as I said previously gasoline is $1.48/gal...so all in all, not such bad trade offs...we like it here...and I can't stress often enough, the people are incredibly friendly...

Hi Bob and Rox,
I'm enjoying reading your blog. I just got the address yesterday from my dad. You two look very healthy and happy. I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures. We're getting ready to celebrate Isaiah's 7th bday and Tim's 30th next weekend.

love.
